Wide of Imam Ali mosque STORYLINE: A few thousand worshippers gathered in Kufa, the third holiest Shiite city in Iraq, to pay their final respects to the deceased Shiite cleric Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim. Hakim was killed in a huge car bombing outside the mosque of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib in the city of Najaf a week ago. The worshippers banged their fists against their chests outside the mourning tents, many of them with mud on their heads - a mourning custom among Shiites. The ceremony took place ahead of morning prayers in Najaf where more than 10 thousand worshippers gathered at the Imam Ali shrine to hear a sermon by Hakim's brother, Abdel-Aziz al-Hakim. In the end, al-Hakim did not appear, and the sermon was delivered by a deputy of his slain brother. Armed security men stood every five meters (yards) along the top of the Shiite shrine, the holiest in Iraq. Al-Hakim, a member of the American-picked governing council, has taken over his slain brother's leadership position in the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq. He was leader of the armed wing of the organization, the Badr Brigade, which U.S. forces ordered disarmed shortly after the war ended on April 9. The group has rearmed in defiance of the U.S. demand.
