ARP is like a translator for internet addresses. Watch to learn more about what ARP is, how it works, and why it's important. Address resolution protocol, or ARP, has one job -- but an important one. It’s responsible for mapping an IP address to a permanent physical machine address in a local area network (LAN) and translating 32-bit IP addresses into 48-bit MAC addresses, which is critical for two computers to share information and communicate. When data arrives at the gateway to a host machine, the ARP program either finds a preexisting translation, and if not, performs the ARP process.
