Last week the world lost a creative mind in songwriter James Richard 'Jim' Steinman. For this tribute Top 10 I picked my favorite 10 songs he wrote or produced but with one condition: Every artist was only allowed to have 2 songs maximum in the list. He was born as James Richard Steinman in New York, his family was of Jewish ancestry. Steinman's music career began in the late 60s when he contributed music for his college of different adaptions for theatres. As a senior he wrote the book, music and lyrics for a musical that was used to fulfil the requirements for an independent study course in his senior year. Several motifs, lyrics and monologues from that musical were later used in songs of Steinman's. In the 70s provided music for puppet shows, muscials and began to write songs for albums of musicians. He met Meat Loaf during a workshop for a work-in-progress musical and started to develop songs for his debut album 'Bat Out Of Hell'. The album was finally released in 1977 after they had trouble finding a record company that wanted to sign them. The album became a massive success - topping the charts in Australia, where it was certified 25x platinum and was later certified multiple times platinum in the USA (14x), UK (11x) and double diamond in Canada. According to Cleveland International Records founder Steve Popovich it sold over 40-million times worldwide. Due to vocal problems Meat Loaf developped in the production phase of the follow-up album to 'Bat Out Of Hell' Steinman recorded 'Bad For Good' as himself and released the lp in 1981. It reached the Top 10 in Australia and the UK, where it peaked at #5 and #7 respectively. Later that year he and Meat Loaf recorded and released his 2nd album 'Dead Ringer'. It topped the UK & Swedish album charts and reached Top 10 in Australia (#5), Germany (#8) and Norway (#10) among other countries. He then worked together with British singer Bonnie Tyler on her album 'Faster Than The Speed Of Night' which was released in 1983. He produced every song and wrote her biggest hit 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' which topped the US, UK, Australian and Canadian Single Charts (just to name a few). In fact Steinman had #1 and #2 at the US Billboard Charts at that time as his song 'Making Love Out Of Nothing At All' which was performed by Air Supply occupied #2 behind Bonnie. In 1984 Steinman wrote another hit for Tyler: 'Holding Out For A Hero' which was used in the Footloose movie. In 1985 he wrote and produced the theme song for WWF-wrestler Hulk Hogan, which can be heard on 'The Wrestling Album'. The non-vocal parts were later reused on Bonnie Tyler's song 'Ravishing' as Steinman worked on her album 'Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire'. In 1987 he produced some songs for 'Sisters Of Mercy' for their album 'Floodland'. In 1989 he worked together with a group named 'Pandora's Box' and released an album called 'Original Sin'. After Meat Loaf and Steinman settled financial and legal disputes in the 80s they worked together on the album 'Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell' in 1993 which topped the charts in many countries such as the UK (where it was the best-selling album of the year), USA, Canada, Germany, Australia and many more. The single 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) became a major hit across the world and topped the Single Charts in the USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Canada, Sweden and many countries more. It was the #1 song of the year in the UK and Australia. In 1995 he co-produced a song for British boy band 'Take That' called 'Never Forget' which topped the UK Single Charts. In 1996 his song 'It's All Coming Back To Me Now' was on the Celine Dion album 'Falling Into You'. It peaked at #2 in the USA and #3 in the UK and topped the Canadian single Charts. He then provided lyrics for an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical which was later the basis for boy-band 'Boyzone' singing their pop-version of 'No Matter What'. It topped the charts in the UK and Ireland. Steinman worked on more musicals, another album for Meat Loaf and many more artists. He suffered a stroke in 2004 and temporarily lost the ability to speak. He suffered another stroke 4 years ago. Jim Steinman passed away at the age of 73 on April 19th, 2021. But his music will live forever. Hope you enjoy this selection!
