Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Make Data Validation Dropdown Arrow Appear on the Left Side of the Cell. Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! I'm Bill Jelen and today we have a question from Brent about data validation and drop-down lists. If you have a question for the podcast, please feel free to drop me a note or leave a voicemail. Unfortunately, Brent's question has two parts and the first part doesn't have a satisfactory answer. He wants to know if there's a way to make the drop-down arrow appear on the left side of the cell when using data validation on merged cells. For those who are unfamiliar with data validation, it's a simple process of selecting a range of cells and specifying a list of values that can be entered in those cells. However, when using merged cells, the drop-down arrow appears way off to the right, making it difficult to access. The only solution I have found is to change the right to left orientation in the International tab of the Tools Options menu. This does solve the problem of getting the drop-down on the left side, but it also causes a host of other issues such as the spreadsheet reading right to left and the row numbers appearing on the right-hand side. As you can imagine, this is not a practical solution and I don't think anyone in their right mind would actually use it. So, unfortunately, I don't have a good solution for Brent's question. However, if anyone watching the podcast has a great solution, please share it with us! Brent also has a second part to his question about data validation, which we will address in tomorrow's podcast. Thank you for tuning in and we'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel. Brent asks if it is possible to make the data validation dropdown arrow appear on the left side of the cell. In Episode 582, I show you a horrible way to accomplish this, that will be entirely unacceptable to 99.9% of the audience.
