Unboxing Nintendo Game Boy Color (1998), the handheld that made gaming portable in color! Released in late 1998, the Game Boy Color brought life to Nintendo’s legendary handheld lineup, started by Game & Watch series (1980-1991) and the original Game Boy (1989-2003!). Many Nintendo's competitors, like Lynx and Game Gear had color screens before Nintendo, but they were criticized for their poor battery life and bulky size. In Nintendo, team led by Satoru Okada, who was major player in original Game Boy's design, was experimenting with color displays in early 90s. They made a prototype, "Project Atlantis", which featured color display and 32-bit processor by ARM. The team was not satisfied with the outcome and project was shelved in 1997. However, competitors such as the Neo Geo Pocket and WonderSwan were entering the market, so Nintendo decided to create a color version of Game Boy with a faster version of original Game Boy's 8-bit processor. Engineer Gunpei Yokoi, who is known for also playing very important role in creating the original DMG-01 Game Boy, was also involved in development of WonderSwan but sadly died in a car accident in 1997, before it was released. Yokoi had left Nintendo in 1996, after financial failure of the Virtua Boy. The successor to the original Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket, the Game Boy Color doubled the processing power, introduced a color TFT LCD screen, and supported classic Game Boy titles. Available in six launch colors (Atomic Purple, Berry, Dandelion, Grape, Teal, and Kiwi) and and numerous limited and special editions, some of them being very rare and collectable. The rarest Game Boy Color might be the Coro Coro magazine's 250th issue Pokemon themed GBC from 1999, it is estimated that only 20-30 pieces exist. Game Boy Color featured a custom 8-bit Sharp processor running at 8.4 MHz, 32 KB of RAM, and 16 KB of video RAM, this tiny console packed decent power for its time. Its 2.3-inch color LCD display was able to show 56 simultaneous colors out of 32,768 colors in total. Some of the most iconic Game Boy Color titles include: Pokémon Gold, Silver & Crystal The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages Super Mario Bros. Deluxe Tetris DX Donkey Kong Country The Game Boy Color could still play the original monochrome Game Boy cartridges, which increased sales significantly. All Game Boy variants and Game Boy Color Combined, 118 million units were sold. The Game Boy Color was discontinued in 2003, but even today, it remains one of the most beloved and collectible handheld consoles in gaming history. Game Boy Colors successor, Game Boy Advance was released already in 2001, finally packing 32-bit processor like Project Atlantis envisioned, but Game Boy Color was kept alongside for two years as budget-friendly alternative. Join us to relive the magic of the late ’90s and the beginning of color gaming on the go. The Game Boy Color also had pretty colorful library of different kind of accessories, but that is a video for another time. Did you have a Game Boy Color growing up?
