There is a parking lot at the corner of Sloat Boulevard and the Great Highway in San Francisco. It serves the zoo. Nothing about it warrants a second glance — except for three ornate concrete arches standing behind a chain-link fence at its edge, carved with sea creatures, leading to absolutely nowhere. Beneath the asphalt, buried under thousands of tons of gravel and rubble, lies the skeleton of a swimming pool one thousand feet long. It held six and a half million gallons of heated saltwater. Lifeguards patrolled it in rowboats. Ten thousand people could swim in it at the same time, and on windy days, waves formed across its surface — actual waves, cresting and breaking inside a concrete basin three football fields from end to end.
