All Thomists would assert and agree that a computer is not a substance but an artifact and that this has ramifications for how we think about anything computers are used to do, including the results of Artificial Intelligence. In this paper, I explore what more can and should be said about exactly what kind of artifact computers are and what kind of art computer programming, and AI programming in particular, is. I will argue that engaging with the physical and algorithmic details of AI in detail, using the tools of Thomistic natural philosophy, allows for a clearer and more precise understanding of what AI is and is not doing, by focusing on the seemingly simple question: Do LLMs have emotions? In the process I hope to model how Thomists can address more difficult issues around AI.
