West Memphis might be the worst small town in the south. You’ve heard about Memphis, and how much that city is struggling. Crime, poverty and drug use are at all-time highs, and some leaders seem to have given up. But you might not have heard of West Memphis. It’s just across the Mississippi River from Memphis in the state of Arkansas. If you measure things like violence, poverty and addiction, West Memphis is one of the worst small cities in the nation. In fact, some publications have called it one of THE worst places to live in the nation. For this drive, we’ll go through some of the most rundown and dangerous pockets of West Memphis. Some parts are really bad - and have been all but abandoned. Others are housing projects where gun violence has destroyed countless lives. Some parts of West Memphis just look older and rougher, but believe me, they are very sad and dangerous. It was a really nice morning the day I drove through West Memphis. Most people were either asleep or getting ready for work. We’re just going to drive through West Memphis so you can see what it looks like. I doubt you’re thinking of moving here. I don’t think anyone should move here until they get a handle on things. If that ever happens. Every year, West Memphis loses more than 1 percent of its population, and that number is accelerating. Today, there’s 23,000 people here, but there were 30,000 people here in the mid 90s. Crime is a big part of the problem here. A couple years ago, this was the 10th worst place in the nation for crime. Arkansas has a lot of problems with crime and poverty, but you knew that. Little Rock, Pine Bluff and El Dorado are also really bad places to live. The unemployment rate here is always higher than the US average, and the poverty rate is as well. Households in West Memphis earn about half the US average. There’s just not a lot of good jobs here, and finding solid entertainment is also hard to come by on this side of the river. The school system needs help - teachers in the state of Arkansas are the 5th lowest paid in the nation. A typical home here is about $83,000. That’s just about as low as you’ll find in any city in the nation. Crime, employment, housing, schools and even user ratings are all big fat Fs.
