Established on 15th June 1960, The University of Burdwan (often called BU) was founded under the sponsorship of the Zamindar of Burdwan, Uday Chand Mahtab, who played a key role in donating his ancestral properties, including the Golapbag Palace and adjoining land, for the establishment of the university. The initiative was part of a broader vision to promote higher education in rural Bengal and develop Burdwan as an academic hub. The university was formally inaugurated by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, who strongly supported the cause of rural educational development. At the time of its inception, the university had only six graduate departments and 30 undergraduate colleges spread over five districts. The Golapbag Campus, the original site of the university, includes historical buildings such as the Golapbag Palace and gardens that once belonged to the royal family.
