When an aneurysm in Elaine's kidney grew to the size of a robin's egg, doctors at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio knew something needed to be done. Because of the location of the aneurysm, operating on the kidney inside the body was not an option. Rather than simply removing the kidney and discarding it, Dr. Vik Kashyap and Dr. Edmund Sanchez removed the kidney, repaired the aneurysm and returned the kidney to her body. The hour-long procedure, similar to a transplant operation, allowed Elaine to keep both of her kidneys and maintain her quality of life.
