Relieve Sinus Pain Now with Balloon Sinuplasty, an office procedure

Dr. Michael Armstrong Richmond ENT discusses the technique of balloon sinus dilation and patients share their experience. It affects more than 37 million people each year, making it one of the most common health problems in the united states -- sinusitis. The symptoms of sinusitis are similar to those of a bad cold: facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, and thick postnasal drainage. When these symptoms become worse after the first week, or last longer than ten days, most physicians will prescribe antibiotics to fight bacteria. We might also recommend decongestants or nasal steroids to reduce swelling in the nose. You may have sinusitis if you have at least three of the following lasting longer than 10 days: Headache Facial pain or pressure Nasal congestion or stuffiness Thick yellow green nasal discharge Mild fever (over 99-100°) Bad breath Toothache Adapted from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head And Neck Surgery 2013 http://www.entnet.org/HealthInformati... Occasional episodes of sinusitis can be treated medically by your physician. However, when infections become frequent or persistent, antibiotics are less effective and the symptoms can become debilitating. Dr. Michael Armstrong, a sinus and facial plastic surgeon in Richmond, Virginia, has been performing a less invasive procedure for recurrent sinusitis since 2008. It's called Balloon Sinuplasty. In functional endoscopic sinus surgery, nasal tissue is cut away with surgical instruments to create a larger drainage pathway for the sinus. With Balloon Sinuplasty, a balloon is inflated, and then removed, to permanently dilate the natural drainage pathway - often without cutting away any tissue. Dr. Armstrong says Balloon Sinuplasty offers patients significant benefits over more invasive procedures. "Balloon Sinuplasty is most commonly performed in the office under local anesthesia. There is no skipping breakfast, no hospital bill, and no anesthesia bill. There is very little bleeding and I rarely use nasal packing. Pain is greatly reduced and most patients return to work within 1-2 days. I have even had some patients return to work the same day!" Patients with three or more sinus infections per year are the ones most likely to benefit from Balloon Sinuplasty. With a dramatic reduction in postoperative pain and recovery, we're finding that patients are interested in Balloon Sinuplasty much sooner than they would be for traditional endoscopic sinus surgery. Dr. Armstrong trained at Johns Hopkins hospital and is board certified in ear, nose and throat surgery and also in facial plastic surgery. Dr. Armstrong founded Richmond ENT in 2000 to develop a center of excellence in sinus surgery that strives to advance the standard of care. He says, "I try to look at the whole picture, as patients may have multiple causes of nasal symptoms or facial pain. Following a complete history and physical examination, I will usually examine the back of the nose with a small endoscope to better see the anatomy and to look for any sinus drainage. We also have the capacity to perform CT scans and allergy tests in our office. We do cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery for cancer or injury. Whatever the nose requires, we have it here at Richmond Sinus and Allergy." Richmond Sinus and Allergy, a division of Richmond ENT, in Richmond, Virginia is a leader in sinus and allergy treatment. Less invasive than conventional sinus surgery, Balloon Sinuplasty can usually be performed in the doctor's office, and allows patients to quickly return to normal activities.
