On leash greetings We often see posts on social media advising us not to have our dogs greet each other on leash. These are usually accompanied by a picture of two dogs straining on the lead and pulling towards each other. What’s wrong with this picture is what the humans are doing. If our dogs can meet each other off lead, then there’s no reason why they can’t while on lead too as long as the following conditions are met (not an exhaustive list) 1. We know both dogs are capable of social, off lead greetings of have made our best assessment that they are 2. We move our feet and handle the lead well so that the lead is relaxed, and the dogs have space to greet each other 3. We have taught our dogs to move with us while on lead so that we can move away when the interaction is done 4. We have some knowledge of canine body language so we can recognise when the interaction is done. In the video the ACD (9 months old) who is super friendly with other dogs is being facilitated by his human in greeting the SBT who is off lead. The SBT mounts him, and our lead handling allows the interaction to be as off lead as possible. Because there is little play (or maybe other reasons) the SBT disengages and then leaves. We facilitate that. The tension on the lead is most often what causes they interaction to go wrong. It’s our job to move and keep that tension off the lead. One of the guidelines I have are that when we are on lead, we either do greetings on a loose lead or we don’t do them at all, it’s the bit in the middle which causes the problems. As with everything, this clip is a moment in time, doesn’t cover all eventualities and the post is to help you think analytically about what we are doing and if what we have been told is right. The ACD’s human has been generous in allowing us to video and use this clip, so please respond to that generosity and kindness in kind when responding. We will be discussing on lead greetings in more detail on our live web class this week, Wednesday 25th at 7PM London time. If you are interested in attending, please comment and I’ll send details on how to join us. Love and peace.
