As a US Air Force experimental STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft, it demonstrated exceptional capabilities, particularly in its ability to take off and land at low airspeeds. One of its notable features is the use of upper-surface blowing, which involves positioning the jet engines to exhaust over the top of the wing. This design, combined with specially designed flaps, allows the jet thrust to provide additional lift, enabling the plane to land at speeds as low as 99 miles per hour. The YC-14 also introduced other cutting-edge technologies, such as "fly-by-light" flight controls and digital airframe design. These innovations would later become standard in Boeing's aircraft designs. Although the YC-14 was not selected for production, it played a significant role in advancing aircraft design and technology. Its impressive performance and capabilities have made it a notable aircraft in aviation history.
