Agriculture is a $1 billion industry in New Jersey, powered by more than 25,000 farmworkers performing hard labor through the hottest parts of the year. As climate change warms the Garden State, those farmworkers face increasing health risks. New Jersey's average annual temperature has risen 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit since 1895, and South Jersey now experiences 15 more days with highs above 90 degrees Health experts stress the critical need for anyone laboring outside to remain hydrated, take frequent shaded breaks and be able to rest in cool places during periods of extreme heat. But there are few federal and state regulations that offer such heat protections, and farmworkers lack the labor protections that would make it easier to advocate for themselves.
