This video demonstrates how you can use kinesio taping to help offload as part of the treatment sequence for iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS). The goal is to decompress at the hip and at the site of the pain in the knee. You'll often find this dysfunction in runners, who feel the pain around the anterior of the knee. A classic symptom of ITBS is that the runner experiences so much discomfort from the pain that they can't run through it. Curiously, they can often sprint without discomfort, but jogging causes the symptoms to reappear. This is because the iliotibial band moves into a posterior position when sprinting, whereas jogging moves it into an anterior position. For this technique to work, you'll need a long length of tape to stretch from the anterior of the iliotibial band, follow the curve of the knee, and run up to the head of the fibular to the greater trochanter, just near the iliac crest. Remember to measure your tape first, then cut - you don't want to end up with a poor anchor or too little tape to effectively offload. BE AWESOME AT WHAT YOU DO Want to learn more?
