At Bowens, we’re not afraid to get stuck into unique and challenging projects. One such project recently saw us take on the task of custom machining and transporting nine intricately detailed fifteen-meter trusses. The exposed trusses were used in a build managed by Interface Constructions, for use at Dandenong West Primary School. Structural drawings depicted fifteen-meter-long trusses, connected with steel plates and bolts, a project that most conventional truss companies would steer clear of. When Bowens Commercial Business Development Manager – Danny Lamb - was approached by Interface’s Commercial Account Manager - Joel Gordon – he was happy to jump straight into the project. “My background is prefab and there's no job that we believe is too hard for us. It’s great when builders come to us with these types of projects in mind. We have a great partnership with Thirteen Projects in our manufacturing of all timber needs.” Danny explains. Ivo Valdari, Founder of Thirteen Projects, says; “When Bowens get an obscure job or something that's a little bit left of field, they contact us and we assist them with our ideas and knowledge.” From the outset, Ivo sat down with Danny and Joel to let them know what challenges they would be up against and what obstacles they should look out for. Ivo explains that; “One of the challenges we were faced with was the number of cleats, being two hundred and seventy cleats for the nine trusses, and making sure that all the CAD drawings and details work to the truss design.” Simon Reading has been a CNC machine operator for over twenty years and is the CNC Operator and Programmer at Thirteen Projects. Simon explained that the first stage is to take original drawings from the architects, work out which sections require machining, then create the drawings for them. “The setup is the most labor-intensive part of the job. Making sure the cutters are set, the jig for the actual machine bed to put the job on is set and then double checking everything so that once it's machined, it's machined the correct way.” explains Simon. The benefit of their CNC machine is that it can cut absolutely anything from perforated ceiling tiles to cross-laminated beams. It’s so accurate that Simon can write names on icy pole sticks. That's the kind of precision we’re talking about! Another challenge the team faced was how to get the huge trusses onto the site. Danny explains, “The transporting was a really big issue that we had to overcome. That's where Thirteen Projects' experience on large jobs kicked in.” Ivo’s solution to this challenge was to build the trusses flat on mobile dollies and then stack them up on top of each other. They then arranged for a house-moving truck to reverse underneath and pick them up, then transporting them to the site. Once they arrived, the truck lowered the body onto portal frames. When the crane was on site the trusses were moved into position for installation. “There was only one movement with each truss to unload and reload it. From the builder's perspective, it was seamless.” says Ivo. Danny concluded, “We're really proud - both Bowens and Thirteen Projects - of the way the job went, from start to the finish. It goes to show, no matter what the project is, nothing's too hard.” Have a unique or challenging project? Give Bowens a call or speak with your Bowens representative today. https://www.bowens.com.au
