No commercial opportunity, however large, is more important than ensuring the long-term survival of consciousness, which becoming multiplanetary enables. Space habitats require mass transfer from elsewhere to grow. Planets do not. That said, a self-sustaining city on the Moon, while not as resilient to calamities that affect Earth as Mars (due to its proximity to Earth), is probably nonetheless worth doing, in addition to Mars.” You see, despite what some people think, Elon Musk isn’t only obsessed with Mars. The SpaceX billionaire is actually pretty interested in the Moon too—especially the idea of a full-on Moon base. But how would SpaceX actually build one, and more importantly, what would they even do up there? Well, let’s dive in and find out! New Inside First SpaceX Moon Base Alpha Plan REVEALED, Better than China & Russia... Just a couple of days ago, Elon Musk painted a pretty wild picture of the Moon’s future. He posted on X: “Once there are lunar factories, robots and mass drivers on the Moon, such that the entire loop is closed, the system probably decouples from conventional currencies and operates autogenously in watts and tonnage.” He was expanding on an earlier point he made about AI in space. Musk argues that satellites with onboard AI compute—where only the results are beamed back to Earth—will become the cheapest way to generate AI output within the next three years. Because these satellites sit in low-latency, sun-synchronous orbit and get constant free solar power, they avoid one of the big bottlenecks we have on Earth: finding enough cheap, reliable electricity. He also claims this would be the fastest way to scale AI within about four years. His rough math goes like this: if you launch about a megaton of satellites per year, each with around 100 kW of power, you’d be adding something like 100 gigawatts of AI compute annually—without operating or maintenance costs—and linking it all back to Earth through high-bandwidth laser connections via Starlink. New Inside First SpaceX Moon Base Alpha Plan REVEALED, Better than China & Russia... Then comes the next level: building satellite factories on the Moon itself. With robots, lunar resources, and a mass driver (basically an electromagnetic railgun), you could launch AI satellites straight into space by flinging them off the Moon’s surface—no rockets needed. The Moon’s low gravity and lack of atmosphere make this way easier than doing anything similar on Earth. If that lunar production loop ever becomes fully self-sustaining, it could run mostly on its own energy and materials, barely relying on Earth at all. At that point, the growth of total AI power could explode into the tens or even hundreds of terawatts per year. That’s the kind of scale associated with a civilization starting to tap a meaningful fraction of the energy available in its entire solar system. Of course, none of that happens without taking the very first step: building a real lunar base. So how would SpaceX actually pull that off? Well, Elon Musk has said before that “Starship will build Moonbase Alpha.” That could mean Starship’s massive payload capacity will make it a powerful workhorse for hauling equipment and materials to the Moon. But it could also imply something even simpler: that Starship itself could be the lunar base.
