The reigning 2019 SA Car of the Year, we tested the A200 version recently and now got the opportunity to test the more powerful A250 version of the baby of the Mercedes-Benz range. Use this link to watch our video of the A200 : • Mercedes A200 Test Review The 5 door hatch bodyshell is identical with the 250 receiving a deeper front spoiler and mild body kit plus attractive 18 inch alloy wheels. Likewise, on the interior, it's much the same with allowance for the extras that are specified by every individual buyer. Under the bonnet the A250 boasts a 2L 4 cylinder petrol engine giving 165kW and a big 350Nm. This is proof of how the game has moved on in recent years. A few years ago this would have qualified as a HOT hatch. Today WARM hatch is a better description. Don't despair though, Mercedes have the A35 and A45 AMG versions waiting for those buyers. On the road, the A250 provides plenty of go and the excellent handling that the A-Class is known for. Perhaps the ride can be a touch hard but blame that on the standard run-flat tyres.............an affliction common to all cars that use these. On the interior, space is highly competitive in the class including the rear seat and boot space. Equipment and specification is always dependent on the individual car and the boxes ticked when ordering. The Mercedes M-Bux connectivity featuring "Hey Mercedes" is brilliant, even if it was a touch over enthusiastic or too keen to oblige at times!!!!!!! A personal gripe specific to the test car was that the manually adjusted drivers seat does not allow sufficient height adjustment. Taller drivers will not find this an issue, but I could not adjust the seat to a high enough level for myself. Specifying electric adjustment should provide more range as I experienced in my previous test of the A200. Our test period, mainly comprised of local commuting duty showed consumption of 7.8l/100km. Considering the power available and the driving covered, I believe that this is a very fair figure that can easily be matched. The Mercedes 7 speed automatic transmission is smooth and comfortable with sport mode available at the click of a button if you want to push on a bit. There is also a choice of an Individual mode if you want to program settings to suit yourself. Currently priced at R597 000 including the 5 year/ 100 000km full maintenance plan, the A-Class proved again why it was crowned as the current SA Car of the Year. #Mercedes #MercedesBenz #MercedesAClass #SACaroftheYear2019
