The grid is changing. Protection relays with communication links, power electronics converters and power management controllers are making the grid smarter. Sophisticated controllers are the brains of the new grid. Testing them under all operating conditions is a very challenging task. The challenge is the high power on one side and the short time constants on the other. This is the job for the controller hardware in the loop technology from Typhoon HIL. Let us examine the system comprising of solar and wind distributed energy resources, a battery storage system, and various loads. Original controllers, off-the-shelf protective relays and communication devices are used in all Typhoon HIL controller hardware in the loop tests.
