Fighting for Mental Health Parity and Patient Care

What is mental health parity? Parity ensures the equal treatment of mental health conditions and substance use disorders in insurance plans. Mental Health has equal importance and deserves equal treatment as Physical Health. Understanding mental health parity gives some insight into one of the reasons why we are striking. As clinicians, we are being asked to provide therapy through a model, called feedback in form care, or FIC. Several of my follow up sessions are a half hour in length, but after chart review and patients being delayed sometimes, the sessions might be only 20 minutes in length. This becomes more of case management than actual psychotherapy. Patients deserve better than this. We are fighting for patient rights.
