Practicing with Tension. In my opinion, the number one mistake that most of us make when playing and practicing is to do so with unnecessary tension. Whether it's in our bodies or minds, tension results in mistakes, plateaus, walls, regression, injuries, and plenty of frustration. Take a minute to think of your favorite guitarists playing on stage. Do they look extremely tense or do they look like they're relaxed? I bet that most of them look pretty relaxed! Our practice is no different. We need to be just as relaxed as the pros, and the key to this is to start by constantly & deliberately associating relaxation with the guitar. After all, the idea is to PLAY guitar, not to conquer it! During practice, no matter how hard a musical passage is, we have to approach it from a relaxed and calm state. The moment we notice tension, we need to stop playing, relax, and try again with relaxation as our overarching state. I guarantee that the more you practice with relaxation, the faster your progress and the more enjoyable your practice will be. Here are some strategies that can help: β’ Always be mindful of your body and mind tension before & during practice. Remind yourself often to stay relaxed while practicing and/or performing. β’ Put all tension-provoking thoughts aside during your practice time. Donβt worry; theyβll be there when youβre done! During practice focus on staying relaxed. β’ Practice in front of a mirror or a blank video call on your computer or device so that you can watch yourself practice. Look for signs of tension and address them immediately. Is your shoulder super-glued to your neck? Are your hands or fingers tense? Are you feeling anxious? Identify the tension and work on relaxing. β’ Donβt be in a hurry! Just do what you can in the time you have.
