"Hey Boy, hey girl welcome in the U.S 60's groove party ! You can move your body on the dancefloor with your french DJ (from Angers - west coast fo France) and his gems and flavor's sélection : soul, boogaloo, latin soul, mambo, soul jazz, linedance..." We began with two Stax classics from 1967 : BOOKER T & THE MG'S and his funky "Hip Hug Her" and the wonderful duet : OTIS REDDING & CARLA THOMAS forever in this "Tramp" song ! If you love "sample" you know "The champ" which has been used in many hip hop tracks. Its authors THE MOHAWKS, was created by the british pianist and library music star : ALAN HAWKSHAW (from KPM). They released a only LP in 1968 " The champ" on Pama Records. But this extended version has been released for the first time on Vampisoul in 2008 on the Vampisoul reissue limited edition. We continue with a latin session. At first two hits from the wonderful percussionist and band leader JACK COSTANZO aka MR BONGO (His nickname). With GERRIE WO, the LP "Latin percussion with soul" arrive on the records shops in 1968 on Tico Records (sold to Fania Recors in 1974). "Jive samba" is a cover of a star of jazz : NAT ADDERLEY. His "Peter Gunn" version (An Henry Mancini Cover from the NBC-TV show), is very groovy too ! If you like boogaloo music, you like PETE RODRIGUEZ and his huge hit "I like it like that" . The same year, in 1967, he released other great songs. "Let's stay together" is one of theses on Alegre Records. The year before it was "Bang Bang" of THE JOE CUBA SEXTET that stirred the surprise parties of teenagers ! A few years earlier it was the revival of LITTLE WILLIE JOHN / PEGGY LEE's classic "Fever" which ignited the Latin scene with the interpretation of LA LUPE ! In this playlist "Let it be me" is a little bit anachronistic song. This original French song released in the 50s by GILBERT BECAUD with the title "Je t'appartiens", had a second life in the 60's with the english lyrics of MANN CURTIS. JAMES BROWN recorded a first version in 1969 with VICKI ANDERSON, and a second rare salsa-soul version probably in 1973 with LYNN COLLINS. We heard it for the first time in 1989 with the LP "Duet" from JB. But it does not matter to hear the Godfather of Soul in a Latin version is sufficiently rare to leave it a place of choice here whatever the year. In 1967, ARCHIE BELL & THE DRELLS make up the hit "Tighten up". The same year AL ESCOBAR & HIS ORCHESTRA offer their version. Direction San Fransisco now with the great SLY STONE who in 1969 with his FAMILY STONE attacks a tube of Otis Redding in a vitamin and rare version. "I can't turn you loose" was released at the time in only in a French single on the BYG label and the following year in Germany. And to continue in the rarities, the title of THE MATTA BABY "Do the pearl girl" is their only single released in 1967 on Penny Records. An effective instrumental which could have been a hit if it had been followed by a major! The world of jazz did not escape the British invasion of the 1960s. And so it is natural that the pianist RAMSEY LEWIS took over in 1968 the "Back in U.S.S.R" of THE BEATLES with a breakbeat of drums later sampled in hip hop. Cadet the record label associated with Chess, had also spotted the opportunity ! To finish two soul jazz classics: "Turtle Walk" by LOU DONALDSON released by Blue Note in 1969 on the album "Hot Dog" and the "I can't get satisified" by BROTHER JACK McDUFF published in 1967 by Atlantic!
