You might know that there are so many ways to classify engines. But, do you know that there are different types of combustion chambers as well? In this video, we have explained the different types of combustion chambers in SI Engines with their advantages and disadvantages. We all know that the engine develops power by burning fuel in the combustion chamber. Therefore, the design of the combustion chamber plays a vital role in enhancing the engine’s performance. Over the years, combustion chambers went through some modifications like the position of the spark plug, location of valves, etc., which eventually leads to different types of combustion chambers. Combustion Chambers in SI engines can be broadly classified into four types. 1. T-head type combustion chamber 2. L-head type combustion chamber 3. I-head type combustion chamber 4. F-head type combustion chamber In the T-head type, the inlet and the exhaust valves are placed on either side of the engine cylinder. This design was complex. In the L-head type, both the inlet and exhaust valves are placed on the same side which resulted in ease of manufacturing and maintenance. In the I-head type, both the valves are placed on the top of the cylinder head. This type is more common and it has higher efficiency and lower emissions. The last type is the F- type. It is an intermediate between I and L head type combustion chambers. It has one valve on the cylinder block and one valve on the cylinder head. That is all about the types of Combustion Chambers in SI engines. Tune in every day to get notified on more videos like this.
