In this lesson we will learn about the imperative (impératif), one of your "extra form of the verb" in French that you should be able to recognise for your GCSE. We will have a look at what it is before learning how to make it. The video explains the imperative, one of the four extra forms of the verb that should be recognized for the GCSE. The imperative is a mood used to give suggestions or advice, but not to relate actual facts. It only comes in three forms: tu for you, nous for we, and vous for you (plural or formal), which corresponds to the formal and informal in English. It is the tu, nous or vous form of the present tense of your verb. The only difference is that for the first group of regular verbs ending in ER, the S of the two form is dropped. The video provides examples for each group of verbs, including regular, irregular, and those of the third group. The imperative form does not use a subject, and the video also covers the negation of the imperative form. Finally, the video discusses irregularities with some verbs and provides a short test. 1. Memorize the forms: As the imperative only has three forms (ti, nous and vous), it's important to memorize them so that you can use them correctly. 2. Use subject pronouns with caution: Unlike in English, the imperative in French doesn't use subject pronouns. For example, instead of saying "tu finis" (you finish), you would simply say "finis" (finish). However, you can use subject pronouns for emphasis or clarity. 3. Drop the -s for first group verbs: For regular verbs in the first group ending in -er, you need to drop the -s in the two form. For example, "tu parles" (you speak) becomes "parle" (speak). 4. Be aware of irregularities: Unfortunately, there are some irregular verbs in the imperative, so it's important to memorize them. Some common irregular verbs in the imperative include être (sois, soyons, soyez) and avoir (aie, ayons, ayez). 5. Use the negative form correctly: To make the negative form of the imperative, sandwich "ne" and "pas" around the verb. For example, "parlez" (speak) becomes "ne parlez pas" (don't speak). Practice, practice, practice: As with any new concept, practice is key to mastering the imperative (impératif) in French. Try creating your own sentences and practicing them out loud to get comfortable using the different forms. I hope these tips are helpful!
