(7 Sep 1995) English/Nat Tahiti's intl airport has been closed after a day of running battles between stone-wielding demonstrators and police. What started as a peaceful anti-nuclear protetest by Tahiti's indep. party and its supporters turned into a full-blown riot. Police firing tear-gas clashed with the crowd of between -500 & 1000 - both on the runway and in the airport terminal and car parks. SOUNDBITE: "I think it's very heavy - a great over-reaction, these people came here to peacefully demonstrate, I saw their marchers there were women with them and they had flowers and they had banners saying "We are striking, we're just going to blockade the airport peacefully".
