The India-built strategic Sittwe Port in Myanmar has opened for operation. Sittwe offers a strategic foothold to India in Mynmar to counter China’s growing influence in the region. The port, built with Indian assistance, will play a key role in connectivity and would lead to 50 per cent reduction in cost and time of transportation of goods between Kolkata, Agartala and Aizwal. This would help solve India’s North-East connectivity dilemma. As the these states are mostly separated from the rest of India except of course at the chicken neck, the port will help shorten the travel time for goods and men. The port was jointly inaugurated by Indian Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal and Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport & Communications of Myanmar, Admiral Tin Aung San on Wednesday. The newly inaugurated port received the first Indian cargo ship which was flagged off from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata. Watch the video to know more...
