Dr. Julie Holland takes the stage at the Psychedelics as Medicine conference in Reykjavík, Iceland with her talk on Good Chemistry. After her talk, the audience was treated to a riveting performance by The Rivals. Dr. Julie Holland is a psychiatrist and psychopharmacologist, and author of the bestsellers Moody Bitches and Weekends at Bellevue. She is the editor of Ecstasy: The Complete Guide and The Pot Book: A Complete Guide to Cannabis. Now a medical advisor to MAPS, she was a medical monitor for several clinical studies examining the efficacy of using MDMA-assisted psychotherapy or cannabis in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Frequently featured on the Today show and CNN’s documentary series “Weed,” her newest book is Good Chemistry: The Science of Connection, From Soul to Psychedelics. In her talk Good Chemistry, Dr. Holland focuses on the epidemic of disconnection that antidepressants and social media can’t fix. This state of isolation puts us in “fight or flight mode,” deranging sleep, metabolism, and libido. What’s worse, we’re paranoid of others. This kill-or-be-killed framework is not a way to live. But, when we feel safe and loved, we can rest, digest, and repair. We can heal. And it is only in this state of belonging that we can open up to connection with others. The Rivals are Julie Holland and Jeremy Wolff, a married couple, a scientist, and an artist, who use the challenge of making music to explore and expose the nature of relationships, as informed by the lessons of psychedelics. This is “info-tainment”--conversation and songs that reveal the patterns, energy, and friction of staying in a creative partnership--a creative rivalry.
