Deepti Sharma: From Agra Girl to India’s All-Round Star Born on 24 August 1997 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Deepti Sharma has become one of India’s most reliable all-rounders. Her father, Bhagwan Sharma, worked with the Indian Railways, and her mother was a school principal. In a family focused on academics, cricket was an unexpected path especially for a girl. Her journey began by chance when she went with her brother Sumit Sharma to the Eklavya Sports Stadium. Former India cricketer Hemlata Kala noticed Deepti’s natural talent when she hit the stumps from 50 meters twice in a row. That moment changed her life. Encouraged by her brother, Deepti started training seriously. Despite financial struggles and social pressure, her family stood by her. Sumit even quit his job to coach her full-time, promising his father two years to make Deepti a national player and he succeeded. At 12, she played for Uttar Pradesh; by 17, she was representing Team India. She made her ODI debut in 2014, T20I debut in 2016, and Test debut in 2021. Her 188-run innings in 2017 remains iconic. In the 2025 World Cup, Deepti made history as the first player (male or female) to score 200+ runs and take 15 wickets in a single tournament. She also became the first Indian woman to claim a WPL hat-trick and 100 T20I wickets.
