The Black experience is often misrepresented and underrepresented in psychological literature. In this TEDx Talk, Ayo McKinney sheds light on the potential benefits of marrying psychology and Afrofuturism by walking the audience through a thought experiment. The experiment combines Dr. Isiah Lavender's explanation of Afrofuturism with different psychological concepts. Afrofuturism is both a critical theory and cultural aesthetic; the expression, exploration, and development of the Black experience is at the core of Afrofuturism. As such, it is an ideal framework for shaping future psychological research aimed at improving Black mental health. Ayo explores the concepts of Afrofuturism and its potential application in psychology, emphasizing the need for culturally relevant models to improve the mental health and self-perception of Black individuals. #Afrofuturism, #psychology, #Tedxtalks, #tedxyouthtalks #tedxyouth, #youth, #inspirationalyouthspeaker #inspirationalspeaker, #sociology, #BlackPanther, #positivepsychology, #arttherapy, #education, #animation, #comicbooks, #contentcreation, #personaldevelopment, #development, #developmentalpsychology, #representation, #intersectionality, #Africana, #diaspora, #mentalhealth, #therapy, #blackyouth #blackboyjoy #africanamerican #black #blackmale As a 23 year old recent magna cum laude graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, Ayo McKinney has an innate desire to learn and create. By day, he’s a certified personal trainer, but by night he is a world builder, crafting connections between media psychology, comic books, and animation. At just 9 years old he wrote his first creative story. Ten years later, he published his first psychological research paper. He spent the last two semesters of college studying Afrofuturism, trying to find connections between it as a cultural aesthetic/critical theory and psychology. By exploring the connections between Afrofuturism and psychology, his hope is to develop a useful model for Black creativity, health, and perseverance. Ayo spends his free time pouring his thoughts into his own comic book universe that he hopes to one day share with the world.
