The nomination came after a chaotic session in which the president's frustrated supporters threw punches and blared sirens and refused to take their seats. The nomination of Viktor Yanukovych marks a humiliating setback for Yushchenko, who defeated Yanukovych in a court-ordered election rerun. "We will never put our own ambitions before the interests of the Ukrainian people," Yanukovych said. Yushchenko has 15 days to consider the nomination and return it to parliament, but he has no right of veto. Yushchenko's allies sounded sirens and shoved their opponents in large scrums that forced Speaker Oleksandr Moroz to continually call short recesses. Fights broke out throughout the parliamentary building. The announcement of the new coalition drew shouts of "Judas" from Moroz's former allies. It was preceded and followed by scuffles, in which one lawmaker from Yushchenko's party appeared to have broken his nose. One of the leaders of the defunct Orange Coalition dismissed the potentially seismic shift in Ukraine's political landscape. "It seems to me that the main party of the coalition, taking into account the processes taking place in our society and our country, is not of interest to the voters," Petro Poroshenko said. Yanukovych's fraud-marred presidential victory in 2004 sparked the massive street protests that became known as the Orange Revolution and helped bring Yushchenko to power.
