This maple was extremely challenging and caused us quite a bit of frustration. It has never been professionally pruned before since the current owner has moved into this house in the 80s. This tree was planted in the late 50s when the house was built and the tree was planted WAAAAY too close to the walkway. It caused the tree to grow into the walkway and the owner had no choice but to continue to cut it so people can pass thru. Yes, it can be removed, but this tree is so old and the roots are so developed that you'd have to complete destroy the steps to dig this out. Sometimes you have to work what's in front of you and no other choice. This is where we come in and our goal is to upgrade the value of the tree. The challenging thing with this tree is how many branches there are and how skinny the branches are. We would prune a section for an hour and it still looked like nothing was pruned. Our eyes definitely began to criss cross from studying so many branches and deciding which ones to cut off. Using our bonsai expertise, Robert Cho and Nolan Cho begin to develop layers for the tree to grow into with selective pruning. We find the branches that have the best character and focus on training those. Keep in mind, niwaki tree pruning takes 10, 15, even 20 years to achieve full potential. What you see in this video is simply day one of its long journey. We turned what looked like a giant wall into a beautiful slant style bonsai with layered ramification. I know Nolan said semi-cascade, but let's be real, he's been pruning in the sun for two very long and tough days and tripped over his words.
