In this video we’ll cover three topics – how to improve your use of aspect ratios, why a photographer might want to use a specific or different aspect ratios, what common aspect ratios exist, and then I’ll go over some photos I’ve taken and talk about why I picked the aspect ratio that I picked. With imaging, any aspect ratio can exist. Want to make an ultra-panoramic photo that’s forty times wider than tall? You can. As always, drop me a comment with your thoughts and ideas about aspect ratios and call out anything I may have missed, too. Let’s jump right in with how to improve: 1- Experiment 2- Break rules 3- Take criticism, give it thought, accept it with a thank you, and then keep trying new things 4- Don’t apologize for trying something new and never listen to someone who tells you it will never work. The sidewalk of the successful is paved with the backs of quitters. Let’s answer the question that kicked off this video: Why use different aspect ratios? I have eight reasons. As I name each item, I’ll share a sample photo or two that show it in use. 1- Creative intent, as a complement to your subject, image story, or the scene 2- Production Medium 3- Subject Complement (or Subject Requirement) 4- Creative Challenge 5- Composition Exploration 6- Preferred Image Structure 7- Too lazy to crop 8- Lens Selection There is no set mandatory aspect ratio for any image. Period and end of story. Want to crop your digital photo to any size or shape you like? Go for it. Want to cut a piece of film or photo paper to a panoramic aspect ratio that no one has ever used before or make a camera that shoots an obscenely long panorama on an entire roll of 35mm? Do it. Want to stitch or merge digital images into some new image shape or aspect ratio? That’s strongly encouraged around here. Aspect ratios are whatever you want them to be. That said, there are some that have been used over the years that are more successful than others, especially today.
