The Free Gingival Graft has always been the 'standard' in gum grafting. It allows us to cover large areas with one donor site. The primary problem is that the donor tissue is taken from the surface tissue on the roof of the mouth. This 'raw' wound can be very uncomfortable during the healing phase. In some situations, we can use a 'donor' tissue rather than the tissue from the roof of the mouth. This means that we will NOT have to cut into the palate. Not every area of recession can be treated with an allograft. The end results of an allograft are very similar to a gingival graft and there is much less discomfort after the treatment. The technique is very similar to the Free Gingival graft surgery. I use Puros Dermis Allograft Tissue Matrix for most of my Allograft soft tissue grafts. The product is safe and very reliable. Truth is, my treatment of choice for most all gum recession still is using the patient's own tissue from the roof of the mouth.
