A look at my first aquaponics set-up. This is a "3-tub-system" which includes a fish tank, grow bed, and reservoir. The fish waste gets filtered through the cardboard, clay grow media (hydroton), and finally gravel that is in the bottom reservoir. The water in the reservoir pumps into the fish tank-- that overflows into the grow bed and when the siphon starts, it falls/gets siphoned back into the reservoir below. My only major problem so far is that before I put down my plastic tarp my wood get very wet and started bowing in the middle. I am hoping it all stays propped up now that I have a plastic tarp to prevent further soaking. Make sure you do this or else that you do not have leaks or are using something other than wood to bear the load. I have mostly hydroton in the grow bed which is light, but also there is gravel in there which doesn't help the bowing situation at all. The lesson is that aquaponics (like life) is a balancing act.
