The vestibulocochlear nerve carries two distinct yet tightly integrated functions: hearing (cochlear) and balance (vestibular).One fascinating aspect is how disorders of this nerve like vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) often first present with subtle hearing loss before balance problems. Even more interesting: because the facial nerve (CN VII) runs in close proximity within the internal acoustic meatus, facial weakness or hemifacial spasm can be an early sign if the tumor expands.
