We believe young people should understand the importance of plants in the world and be aware of the relevance of plant science to modern life. Plant scientists are working at the forefront of biology, investigating how to create sustainable food and fuel for a growing population, protect biodiversity for future generations, and deepen knowledge of how living organisms have evolved and develop. For today’s research to have impact, we need to ensure that we inspire the next generation of plant scientists to continue this work and develop new ideas. In comes Alex Jenkins, Project Manager of Science And Plants for Schools that helps teachers and technicians deliver better plant science in schools. By working with curriculum developers, producing useful teaching resources, SAPS enables teachers to share ideas and encourages plant scientists to get involved in education and outreach. 0:00 Who is Alex Jenkin? 0:29 Why plants are better than animals 1:05 A move into science communication 2:23 @ScienceAndPlants for Schools (SAPS) Speaker profile: Having been less than thrilled by plant science at school, Alex went on to complete her degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge with a final year in plant science.
