Composed by Turlough O'Carolan. Arranged by Sylvia Woods (From her book '40 O'Carolan Tunes'). According to Wikipedia and other sources, this was an untitled tune in the collection of O'Carolan's tunes and was only named 'O'Carolan's Welcome' by (great Irish band) The Chieftans to welcome Pope John Paul II on his visit to Ireland in 1979. Since then, it's become a very popular tune recorded all over the place, on all sorts of instruments, using that name. A lot of people seem to consider it a waltz and find it quite cheerful but it seems to me a haunting and thoughtful kind of tune and I would rather play it so. --- Picture credits: Chris Hill & @sandrakiely_photography / Instagram
