Originally built in the 1570's by Sir Humphrey Stafford, Kirby Hall near Corby in Northamptonshire was later modified by Christopher Hatton, a courtier of Elizabeth I. Hatton hoped to entice the Queen to visit, but despite his best efforts to make the house fit for royalty, she never came to stay in his new suite of state rooms. However, his efforts were not entirely wasted, as James I visited several times during his reign. Kirby Hall had further modifications in the 17th century, but sadly, during the 18th century, the house was abandoned and gradually fell into a state of ruin. In 1930, the government stepped in and the house has since been managed and in some parts, restored by English Heritage. It's a lovely place to wander for a couple of hours and enjoy the scenery. There are several covered (indoor) rooms to explore, plus a small exhibition but this video shows only the external areas of the house and gardens.
