Kaohsiung is Taiwan's largest port city and a vibrant metropolis located in the sunny south. Known as Taiwan's 'Maritime Capital,' it offers a unique blend of industrial heritage and modern artistic transformation. Visitors can enjoy pleasant weather year-round, stunning harbor views, and a diverse culinary scene. From the creative warehouses of the Pier-2 Art Center to the traditional charm of the Lotus Pond, Kaohsiung is a city where history and contemporary culture coexist beautifully. The Railway Art District in Kaohsiung, commonly known as the Hamasen Railway Cultural Park, is a massive open-air art space and historical site located at the western end of the Pier-2 Art Center. It sits on the former site of the Kaohsiung Port Station, the city’s first railway station built during the Japanese colonial era. The Port of Kaohsiung is Taiwan's largest international commercial harbor and a critical maritime gateway for the Asia-Pacific region. Spanning six administrative districts in southern Kaohsiung, it handles over 10 million TEUs of container cargo annually and serves more than 130 global shipping routes. The warehouses of Kaohsiung Port have undergone a stunning transformation from industrial storage spaces into Taiwan’s most vibrant cultural and creative hubs. Collectively known as the Pier 2 Art Center and the Kao Port Shopping District, these red-brick and concrete structures are the soul of the city’s waterfront. The Great Harbor Bridge is a major landmark in Kaohsiung's Yancheng District and holds the title of the longest horizontally rotating swing bridge in Asia. Inaugurated in July 2020, it is the first bridge of its kind in Taiwan, designed specifically for pedestrians and cyclists to connect the Pier 2 Art Center with the Penglai Commercial Area (including KW2 and Depot 410). Warehouse No. 9 is a key part of the Kaohsiung Port Depot 410 complex, a group of four repurposed historical warehouses located across the Great Harbor Bridge from the main Pier 2 Art Center. The Kaohsiung Music Center is a futuristic, ocean-themed landmark situated in the Asia New Bay Area at the junction of the Love River and Kaohsiung Port. Officially opened in October 2021, the 11-hectare complex is a major hub for pop music performances and cultural events in southern Taiwan. The Coral Reef Cape is a scenic waterfront observation and event area within the Coral Zone of the Kaohsiung Music Center. It is widely considered one of the best "first-row" vantage points for viewing the Kaohsiung harbor and experiencing the city's coastal atmosphere. The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are an iconic pair of seven-story twin towers located on Lotus Pond in Kaohsiung’s Zuoying District. Built in 1976 by the Zuoying Tzu Chi Palace, they are one of the city's most recognizable landmarks and are steeped in traditional Chinese symbolism. The Spring and Autumn Pavilions are a Taoist temple complex located on Lotus Pond. Built in 1953, they predate the more famous Dragon and Tiger Pagodas and are dedicated to Guan Gong (Lord Kuan), the God of War. The British Consulate at Takow is the oldest Western-style modern building in Taiwan. Located on a hill overlooking Sizihwan Bay and Kaohsiung Port, it was completed in 1879 and served as the first consulate established by the British government in Taiwan. The Cijin Ferry is the primary maritime link between mainland Kaohsiung and Cijin Island, a historic narrow strip of land famous for its seafood, black sand beach, and lighthouse. It is a quintessential Kaohsiung experience, offering quick, affordable transit with panoramic views of the harbor and city skyline. The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, is the world’s largest performing arts center under a single roof. Located in the Fengshan District, this 141,000-square-meter facility transformed a former military base into a world-class cultural landmark. The Sanduo Shopping District is one of Kaohsiung's most affluent and vibrant commercial hubs, often referred to as the "Manhattan of Kaohsiung". It is characterized by its high concentration of large department stores, entertainment venues, and a bustling street-level shopping scene. Starlight Boulevard is a long, narrow green pedestrian corridor in Kaohsiung's Cianjhen District. It serves as a landscaped urban park that connects the Sanduo Shopping District to the Singuang Ferry Wharf and the waterfront. The Kaohsiung Exhibition Center is Taiwan's first multifunctional waterfront venue, located at the heart of the Asia New Bay Area. Opened in 2014, it is a landmark of modern architecture designed with a distinctive wave-like structure that reflects Kaohsiung's maritime heritage. New Zuoying Railway Station (新左營車站), is the primary high-speed transportation gateway to Kaohsiung. It is the only station in southern Taiwan that functions as a "Three-Rail Interchange," seamlessly integrating three major transit systems in a single massive complex.
