On 3 July 2025, Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, took questions from the media after presenting her latest report to the Human Rights Council. Special Rapporteurs are experts appointed by the national governments which have a seat on the Human Rights Council. They report back to the Council in Geneva and other UN venues where representatives of national governments meet, such as the General Assembly in New York. They are not UN staff members, and the UN does not provide them with a salary. They work voluntarily and independently to maintain the impartiality of their views. Their reports help governments form common positions on pressing human rights issues. The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system comprising representatives of 47 national governments. It holds regular sessions three times a year at the United Nations Office in Geneva. The Council’s decisions represent the position of the national governments that sit on it, not the United Nations system, its leadership, or its employees. #HRC59
