May 2021 Update: On a quiet Weekday morning I stopped to take a photo (from Sunset Dr.) of the main entrance, and must of woken up the guards. I wasn't there 2 minutes when I was approached by security to make sure I was only there to snap a photo and not on a spying mission. Amazing to think that after all these years, the government is still spending countless thousands to keep the lawn cut and keep security on site 24-7, just to make sure the public does not walk on the 460 acres of lawn or come near the buildings. Do they not realize the buildings are rotting away, and that 460 acres of well maintained lawns would serve the community well if they simply allowed people to enjoy the park like settings? The new Area 51 of Ontario. October 2020 Update: This facility is still unchanged, and appears be locked up in a time capsule. In the last couple of years, there are now NO TRESPASSING signs all over the property. So that means that even the general public cannot even access the lawns to walk their dogs, or simply take a nice walk. I mean, I can understand not wanting the public to do any damage to the property...but to not allow access to the hundreds of acres of open lawn areas makes one wonder? Every time I see the sign...'Ontario Yours' to Discover'...I think to myself...that's only allowed in designated areas that us ordinary citizens are trusted enough to enjoy. All the government has to do is post a NO TRESSPASING sign (without any explanation) and that's it?....well that is beyond me. Even before construction was complete, the hospital was known as the finest mental health hospital in the country because of its modern design. The site included 460 acres of land for the facility’s food and produce needs. The site was used as a training ground for the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. Over sixty thousand British Commonwealth air force personnel along with volunteers were trained at the facility. The provincial government reopened the hospital to patients in 1945 and by 1947 there were close to 1,100 patients. In June 2013, Regional Mental Health Care St. Thomas closed it's doors, replaced by the new state of the art facility - St. Joseph's Southwest Centre for ForensiMental Health Care.
