Applecross | Bettyhill | NC500 | Scottish Highlands & Islands Travelogue 2018 | S1E13

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We drive from Applecross to Betty Hill via Bealach na Bà! After another rough night in the iKamper rooftop tent, or rather out of the tent because we did not feel safe up there as the wind and tent conspired to try and consume us, we got what sleep we could while sitting up in the truck. In the morning we set out to find caffeine and diesel. We couldn't find coffee in Applecross (probably due to October being off-season), and the 24-hour unattended fuel station refused to accept any of our credit cards. So with 1/8 of a tank of diesel, we set out for the short but very interesting drive over Bealach na Bà (Cattle Pass) to the town of Lochcarron where we hope to fill the fuel tank. Bealach na Bà features the steepest road ascent in the UK and is the 3rd highest road. We didn't fully realize this when we set off, but soon we were driving through blanketing fog and hairpin switchbacks as we crested the pass and descended on the Lochcarron side. This is a bucket list drive for many, and during the summer months offers astounding views on both sides (to Skye on the Applecross side, and Lochcarron on the other). We didn't get the views, but the drive was a memorable one, with a couple of challenging moments due to the steep gradient and single-track road! Successfully locating diesel in Lochcarron, filling the tank, and emptying our wallet, we head up to Scotland's wild North Atlantic coast via Ullapool and Durness. We've covered the Lochcarron to Ullapool part of this drive previously in Episode 11 of this series (which may be found here: http://bit.ly/travel4x4tv-horgabost-u...) so we've omitted that portion from this video. Unfortunately, we encounter an issue with the Land Rover Defender on the way up to Ullapool - selecting top gear results in a metallic grinding noise from the transmission. Upon reaching Ullapool we call Duncan at Scotland Overland (they furnished the vehicle) and discuss the issue. Since the vehicle seems fine in gears 1-5 we collectively decide to continue, and we'll avoid 6th gear. After a tasty lunch at the Ceilidh Place restaurant, bookstore, and bunkhouse (recommended) at Ullapool we drive the NC500 route from Ullapool to Durness, which is extremely varied and scenic, but we don't have time to do much sightseeing along the way due to the distance we want to cover today, and due to the lost time due to loss of top gear. We decide to stay for the night at the Bettyhill Hotel (recommended) at Bettyhill, a town on the North Atlantic coast, and make it there just as daylight starts to fail. We received a warm welcome at the Bettyhill Hotel and enjoyed some delicious Indian Food (a house specialty), and a comfortable night's sleep (much needed after the long day and lack of sleep the previous night).
