“My Wild Irish Rose” was written by Chauncy Olcott, the same singer who wrote “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling”, for his operetta A Romance of Athlone (1899). An accomplished tenor in light opera, Olcott published “My Wild Irish Rose” that year, and the singer Albert Campbell recorded and released it. Over the years, dozens of other Irish singers, including John McCormack (1914)and Arthur Ball (1928), made recordings. Olcott himself recorded it in 1913. The song became even more popular when associated with the silent film of the same name in 1922. In 1947 the sound film My Wild Irish Rose presented a fictionalized account of Olcott, tracing the rise of an Irish-American tenor to stardom. It was nominated for an Academy Award in 1948. Olcott's original composition of the same name was included in the film's music and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.
