Today, we have an exciting project to share with you: a segmented hollow form with a beautiful chevron feature ring. With its intricate design and mesmerizing patterns, this wooden masterpiece will surely catch anyone's attention. So, let's dive right in! Segmented turning is a technique that involves piecing together different segments of wood to create a stunning final product. In this project, we'll be using a combination of hardwoods like ashe juniper, beech, African mahogany, walnut, and big leaf maple, carefully selected to complement each other's color and grain pattern. The first step is to prepare all the segments that will form the walls of our hollow form. Each segment is precisely cut to ensure a tight fit, forming a seamless ring. Great care is taken to ensure the grain pattern of each segment aligns perfectly, creating a beautiful flowing effect. I already had two rings from a previously abandoned project so I decided to build the vessel around those. Once the segments are cut, we begin assembling them on a wooden lathe. We use special glue specifically designed for woodturning, creating a sturdy and durable bond between the segments. As we stack each layer, we rotate the form, gradually building up the walls of our hollow shape. With the wall assembled, it's time to give the form its distinctive shape. Using a variety of woodturning tools, we carefully shape the exterior, refining the curves and ensuring a smooth surface. This meticulous process requires precision and patience but is incredibly rewarding when the form begins to take its final shape. Now comes the exciting part - adding the chevron feature ring. Inspired by traditional chevron designs, we carefully select contrasting wood species that will make the ring stand out. Using a technique called "stack and cut," we layer different woods to form a visually striking pattern. This feature ring will be inserted at the perfect height within the hollow form, creating an eye-catching centerpiece! As the final touches, we take special care to sand and finish the segmented hollow form. Multiple sanding rounds ensure a silky smooth surface, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood. Lastly, a protective finish is applied, enhancing the colors and providing a long-lasting shine. And there you have it, our stunning segmented hollow form with a mesmerizing chevron feature ring. Its intricate design and impeccable craftsmanship make it a true work of art. Whether displayed as a centerpiece or used practically, this piece will surely captivate anyone's attention. This is a large piece. It measures just over 10" wide and 7 1/2" tall in its current configuration. That will change once the lid and finial are added.
