Mantled Howler Monkey Eating Leaves. Chillin'.

Or should I say that this mantled howler monkey is chillin' BECAUSE it primarily eats leaves? Mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) are mostly folivorous, eating a diet where 50-75% of the food they take in is leaves. While this gives them an abundant food source, filling a niche mostly untapped by other by other mammals, it is a low energy food source. It is this low energy diet that makes them much more sedentary than the other monkey species of Costa Rica. They spend a large portion of the day resting. They will also eat flowers and fruit when available. Fruits can become 50% of their diet when they become abundant in the wet season. Mantled howler monkeys prefer to eat young leaves over those that are more mature. The younger leaves generally have more nutrients, fewer toxins, are easier to digest, and have a higher protein to fiber ratio. These howler monkeys are also selective about the species of trees they eat from, as the various species contain differing levels of toxins. Leaves and fruit from Ficus trees are a preferred food source of the mantled howler. The mantled howler monkeys of Costa Rica are primarily the golden mantled howler monkey subspecies (Alouatta palliata palliata). I have more howler monkey footage to upload soon.
