Mubanga is quietly leading a cultural shift — not just among young people, but across older Australians and the African diaspora — helping make Afrodance and dance therapy mainstream. In this conversation, I couldn’t help but notice how closely his journey mirrors my own. Like Mubanga, I came to Australia as a young man and quickly found myself trying to navigate a system that wasn’t built with people like us in mind. I struggled to integrate, to find language for my identity, and eventually turned to photography as a form of expression and survival. Mubanga’s story follows a similar rhythm. As a young migrant student, unsure where he fit and how to express himself, he leaned into a gift his father had encouraged from an early age — dance. What started as an outlet slowly became a calling. Today, Mubanga is travelling the world, teaching, performing, and building a life around Afrodance — but the journey was anything but easy. In this episode of the Becoming a CEO Podcast, we unpack the real story behind the movement. We talk about: His early journey into dance and self-discovery The courage to start, even when it felt uncomfortable or misunderstood The influence of Afrobeats on Afrodance as an evolving art form His creative process and how he develops original dance steps Monetising dance and whether dance moves can be copyrighted The challenges, setbacks, and sacrifices behind building a creative career This is an honest, inspiring conversation about identity, creativity, courage, and starting before you feel ready. If you’re a creative, an entrepreneur, or someone searching for permission to begin — this one is for you. Sit back, grab a tea, and hit play.
