Before you all come after me, I know Gen Z isn't the only group of people who are guilty of this. But I am part of Gen Z, I'm surrounded by it, and I've noticed a lot of troubling trends when it comes to their consumer habits. So I wanted to take a look at the different things younger people tend to spend money on and see where we can save in each of these categories. And don't get me wrong, my advice in the video is not going to be to spend zero dollars on anything fun. I am all about doing stuff you enjoy, buying stuff you want, and I am even a big advocate for traveling while you are young. So let's dive in, here is a high level overview of what we are going to talk about in the video. Amazon - It wouldn't be a video about consumerism if we didn't talk about amazon. And let's be clear, I love amazon. If you can afford it, I think it actually is a great value. But it can also be dangerous as it brings the world of e-commerce right to our fingertips, which can cause a lot of people to overspend. Influencer Marketed Products - It's difficult to get on social media today without ads being thrown in your face, and this also applies to content that is supposed to be organic. Every one is trying to sell something. We'll talk about this in the video so you can be aware. Going Out to Eat - This one was the most shocking to me. On average, Americans are spending too much at restaurants. I'll save the specific numbers for the video, but you aren't going to want to miss this. iPhones - We all love our iPhones, and know we live in a weird social construct where having green text messages will make you an outcast. So you can still have your iPhone, but do you really need to buy a new one every two years. Tune in to see how you can save on your phone. We will chat briefly about designer goods, which you will learn I have a very low tolerance for. Unless you are rolling in millions, try to avoid these. Coffee - I know this one also might trigger a lot of people, but I think the average American spends too much going out to get coffee. I've seen people order Starbuck's drinks for the same price that you could go get a lunch for. It doesn't mean I am completely against it, but we have to talk about. Vacations - We are ending on a good one. And believe it or not, I am actually a huge advocate for traveling while you are young. Your responsibilities are probably the smallest they are ever going to be, and I think it great for people to get out there and see the world. That being said, the average Gen Zer spend way too much on travel, and we are going to talk about why you should cut back. To end the video, we tally up the savings that we found in each section, and we ran a scenario where we invested those savings over the course of 40 years, and the result will shock you. The goal of this was not to scare you out of spending any money, I just want you to be more intentional so that you can maximize your finances while you are enjoying your life.
