Aralsk: The Sea That Vanished – A Journey Along the Silk Road

Dopo aver attraversato il deserto del Mangystau – di cui vi invito a guardare il video dedicato – inizia un lungo track di circa 600 chilometri attraverso la steppa kazaka per raggiungere Aralsk, sulle rive ormai lontane del Lago d’Aral. Il paesaggio è vasto e silenzioso, interrotto solo da mandrie di cammelli o cavalli che si muovono liberi nell’immensità. Le auto che si incontrano sono pochissime, e la sensazione è quella di trovarsi davvero nel cuore dell’Asia Centrale. Arrivare ad Aralsk porta però anche un senso di tristezza: il grande Lago d’Aral, un tempo mare vivo e pescoso, oggi è in gran parte prosciugato. Il terreno è coperto di sale e residui di pesticidi, e la natura fatica a riprendersi dopo lo sfruttamento umano. Questa è solo una delle tappe del nostro viaggio lungo la Via della Seta, che ci porterà attraverso Afghanistan e Iran, fino in Iraq e nel cuore del Medio Oriente. After crossing the Mangystau Desert – and I really recommend watching the dedicated video – begins a long 600 km track across the Kazakh steppe towards Aralsk, once a port city on the shores of the Aral Sea. The landscape is vast and silent, broken only by herds of camels or wild horses roaming freely. Cars are rare here, and the endless horizon makes you feel truly in the heart of Central Asia. Reaching Aralsk, however, brings a feeling of sadness: the great Aral Sea, once a living and thriving sea, is now mostly dried up. The land is covered with salt and pesticide residues, and nature struggles to recover from decades of human exploitation. This is just one of the stages of our journey along the Silk Road, which will take us through Afghanistan and Iran, on to Iraq and deep into the Middle East. Please excuse us if some of the shots are a bit shaky — we’re not professionals, and capturing the beauty of these landscapes isn’t always easy.
