Tolkien, being an incredible philologist, translated the epic Old English poem of Beowulf into modern English, and thanks to his son Christopher for publishing it, we can enjoy it for our own reading pleasure. The book also includes a couple hundred pages of commentary which I found to be absolutely fascinating. Tolkien's vast historical knowledge illuminates the characters, settings, and themes in an incredibly engaging way.
