An MRI is safe and painless, and can be a useful tool for helping your doctor see useful images of the inside of your body, including tissue that cannot be seen on a traditional X-Ray. Before your exam, it is very important for you to fill out your screening form carefully. Your healthcare team needs to know about any metal in your body. A technologist will review your history before your exam. Be sure to tell the technologist if you are pregnant, have an allergy to contrast dye, or have kidney or liver problems. An MRI machine uses a powerful magnet to make images of your body. Unlike a CT scan, it does not use X-Rays or other radiation. You will be given ear protection, as the scanner makes a loud noise while it is operating. The MRI is controlled by a nearby room. You will be closely observed throughout the procedure, and you can signal the technologist any time you need something. Patients are in the scanner for about 20-30 minutes on average, depending on the images that need to be taken. A complex examination may take longer. If you are concerned about being in the scanner for this length in time, talk to your physician or the technologist. They may be able to help you with some tips on how to stay comfortable. If you need to be removed from the scanner, this can be done very quickly. The ends of the scanner are always open. After your exam, the images will be reviewed by the Neuroradiologist. A report will be sent to your referring physician.
